Exhibition “Under the spell of the Grossglockner”

In East Tyrol a permanent exhibition is dedicated to the almost 4,000 m high and highest mountain of Austria

In the Glocknerhaus in Kals am Grossglockner, a permanent exhibition is dedicated to the "King of the Eastern Alps". The 3,798 m high Mt Grossglockner is part of the Glockner Group, a mountain range in the High Tauern. It was climbed for the first time in 1800 and is among the most climbed mountains.

In six rooms you can discover the story of the mountain with its first mountain hut, built in the 18th century, and interesting things about alpinism in general. A then mountaineering equipment is confronted with a modern one of today and walkable maps are presented.

A part of the exhibition "Under the spell of the Grossglockner" is dedicated to the High Tauern National Park, where the Glocknerhaus building and the village of Kals are located. Findings of the valley which date back to the 2nd millennium BC and to Roman Age can be admired. Also the hard life during the last centuries in the Kalser valley, with all its traditions is shown. The exhibition is topped off with a collection of minerals found in the Glockner Group.
